BACKGROUND

The first HIV/AIDS cases where reported in Ghana in 1986. Since then the government and non-governmental organizations have taken several measures to help curb down the transmission. Unfortunately most of these activities have centered on the big cities living the villages/ rural areas at the mercy of the disease.

Sentinel surveillance in our country has shown that the average prevalence rate has increase from 2.6% in 1994 to 3.6% in 2004. Currently, hetero sexual contact is the main mode of transmission and its attacking the Economic Active Segment of our population (25 – 45 years).

In the two communities we have chosen, socio-cultural practices allows men to marry as many as they want.
Women are not economically viable and rely on men for living.
Married women do not know how to negotiate condom use.
And young girls are push into early marriage.
People think every long standing disease are due to curse and witchcraft and needs occultic intervention.

The NCF Ghana by its philosophy, principles and training can render services in HIV / AIDS education, and counseling, training of Peer Educators and provide Home-Based Care for people living with HIV/ AIDS (PLWHAS).

We also believe in the Right to dignify and want to be advocates for the vulnerable in these communities.
